The Five Stages of Urban Guerrilla Warfare

Unable to find a tested guide to urban guerrilla success, the author has constructed a five-stage strategy by which, theoretically, urban guerrillas might succeed in taking over a city. Two major constraints face urban guerrillas: difficulties in moving insurgency into the city, and limits on the kinds of activities possible there. Further, the urban environment may pose new dangers for them, such as proximity of elite army units, efficiency of secret police, and competition with other urban groups for popular support.

Group & Guerilla Anarchism

It places hit and run tactics at the forefront, unlike static insurrectionary squatting and informal attacks by individuals, it recognizes the need for support networks, group organisation and mobile, underground tactics. A rejection of mass structures of organisation and and an emphasis on direct action, waged by autonomous groups is at the heart of the modern anarcho-guerrilla.

The Guerrilla is our practice, the group is our preferred form of organisation. The autonomous group, sometimes known as the affinity group in the history books, does not negate the necessity for structured, permanent organisation, roles and specialization. It also does not stifle the absolute need for individual initiative from within and outside the groups themselves. The small group is both structured and flexible, allowing the fullest development of the individual and the concerted attack of the collective. It rejects mass structures, which soon descend into leadership, bureaucracy, and are prone to police infiltration.

Neighborhood advocates or vigilantes?

Montavilla Initiative began doing its own foot patrols, which others had done previously. Experts say similar groups have sprung up in other cities, including Long Beach and the west San Fernando Valley, as a conservative, tough-love response to the problem.

The county had to hire extra security after seven visits by the group, officials said. Among other things, they said, Montavilla Initiative members photographed clients of the needle exchange, some of whom feared being exposed on social media.

But supply chains aren’t purely physical. They’re also made of information. Modern supply-chain management, or S.C.M., is done through software. The people who design and coördinate supply chains don’t see warehouses or workers. They stare at screens filled with icons and tables. Their view of the supply chain is abstract. It may be the one that matters most.
